CHAPTER FORTY-SIX

“Let me get this straight. You wanted me to come help you navigate Monacan because you walked into a whoopin’ you couldn’t handle, so I agree, then you bring me to the goddamn hospital?” Hollis asked.

When Hollis said it, it sounded a little bit ridiculous, but then again, this wasn’t just a regular case. He wasn’t there in any official capacity, and his deputy had been kidnapped for reasons he still didn’t understand.

“It wasn’t a whoopin’ I couldn’t handle,” Elven said.

“Your face says otherwise,” Hollis argued.

“And I didn’t ask your help to navigate Monacan. I asked your help to make the connections to people like Gunner, which you did. So, thank you,” Elven said.

“And now what? I just drive you around like your own personal chauffeur?” Hollis asked.

“If calling yourself my chauffeur makes you feel important, then sure, let’s call it that,” Elven said, walking through the automatic sliding doors of the hospital.

Hollis grumbled. “This ain’t what I signed up for.”

Elven stopped and turned to Hollis, standing in the fluorescent-lit entryway. The lobby sparsely occupied, a grouping of chairs dotted with patients waiting to be seen. A receptionist eyed them from behind her desk, but quickly went back to whatever she was dealing with on the computer in front of her.

“Look, I asked for your help, alright? That should mean a lot to you. Your favor is being cashed in, so however it needs to be handled, we will handle it, right? Sometimes it ain’t all about dealing with criminals, but asking questions. This is where my job comes into play,” Elven said. “Plus, it was your tip that led me here.”

Hollis huffed, but nodded. Elven wasn’t sure, but it seemed like Hollis was a little more on edge than usual. As if he had some skin in the game, which told Elven that he was at least taking it seriously.

“Thank you,” Elven said. “Now, let me see if I can work some charm on the receptionist to talk to the surgeon.”

He approached the counter with a smile. “Excuse me,” he said. “I’m hoping to get a meeting with the surgeon on duty right now.”

She didn’t seem to enjoy her job much and spoke in monotone. “He’s very busy and meetings need to be scheduled through his office, not the hospital. If you have a medical reason for being here, I can check you in, or you can move away from my window.”

Wow, he thought. Not a whole lot of joy in this one. “I figured maybe I could just take a quick moment of his time,” he said.

She sighed, then looked up at him, where he offered a quick wink. “Oh, Lord,” she gasped.

“What’s that?” he asked, confused at her response.

“Is that how your eye normally is, or did you get nerve damage from whatever happened to your face?” she asked.

He sighed, his shoulders slumping over. Hollis stifled a laugh—poorly—from behind him.

“That’s why we’re here,” Hollis said. “We were told the surgeon at Monacan County Hospital could speak with him from his GP.
